Matthew Van Der Want Live

Matthew van der Want hit the SA music scene running back in 1996 with his debut album, “Turn on You”, which was produced by Shifty Records’ Lloyd Ross. With Chris Letcher, he formed the acoustic duo van der Want / Letcher which toured the country for several years. Van der Want / Letcher released the albums “Low Riding” (1998) “Bignity” (2002), both through Shifty Records, and “Casual Killing” (2005). “Bignity” was included among the Mail & Guardian’s top ten albums of the decade.
In 2006, after releasing his next solo album “Play my Way”, Matthew decided to try and give up the South African music industry, and to take up the law instead. He has continued to write and record his music, releasing two further solo albums, “Outstanding” (2012) and “Terror love” (2016).
As one critic has put it, “Matthew’s songs reflect cutting insights into matters of the heart…he says what he thinks, but he does so with such frightening beauty that you can’t look away”.
